Circus bActive Commissioned by Derby City Council bActive Designed by Sarah Smith A ground-breaking project commissioned by Derby City Council to launch its Active Schools programme. In partnership with bActive, Red Earth Theatre toured a tent - with stage, lights, sound and seating for 300 people - and a company of 6 clowns to primary schools in Derby. At each school we were resident for a week working with the whole school community on being active and staying active. The company led activity-based learning in lessons, and activities before and after school, at break and lunch times. At the end of each week the whole school community was invited to an early evening event where they participated in physical activities and a special show in the Circus bActive tent. The company worked with children from nursery to Year 6, and with autistic children in two schools with Enhanced Resource Facilities (ERFs). |

Children & Young People Welcome to the surreal world of Reiner Zimnik,
featuring a day-dreaming truck driver called Lektro, an eagle that can
keep a secret and a silver lion that doesn't dare do a thing. In Lektro's
world lots of adventures happen, but it's hard to tell if they are real
or imagined. Young people aged 9 to 16 from schools across Derby worked with a team of professional actors, designers, directors and technicians to stage Lektro and the Silver Lion. |

| Feedback “It was great to work with professionals… although they asked a lot, they know how you feel… and we were treated like professionals.” “Normally I’m shy but no-one here would know that… here I’ve felt more confident and acted confidently…I was the ring-mistress and they’ve made me bring it out.” “Thought-provoking material… excellent preparation e.g. props, timing, background, sound etc... superb acting/voice projection... students totally involved throughout performance.” “At school the teachers tell you what to do and what the characters are like... here there’s no script and you’ve devised it, created your character… I’ve put in more effort than usual working out how to do it… I was challenged and pleased to have so many lines… it’s your own.” “I was scared and nervous at first… I loved every scene: the tricks, not having many props… you gotta catch on quickly… at school you get embarrassed, here you don’t... it was fun… and you’re proud of yourself.” “There were serious bits and fun… we met like-minded people who enjoy drama.. we learnt vocal exercises, to walk in character… exaggerated movement, commedia dell’arte.” “It was magnificent... I’d definitely
come to another one.”
