An Action Research Project based on Mantle of the Expert

For one year Red Earth Theatre was engaged in creative teaching and learning based
on the concept of Mantle of the Expert developed by British drama educator
Dorothy Heathcote. Our purpose was to research the impact of social
learning contexts on behaviours, attitudes to learning and academic
achievement in the primary school classroom. The project yielded evidence of
substantial success and a positive impact on children’s academic attainment, their
broader social and cultural achievements, attitudes to learning and behaviours. The study included deaf children; their success was significant.

The Secret Language of Cranes

Commisioned by Creative Partnerships Derby for the city's Children and young People's Dance and Theatre Festival, The Secret Language of Cranes was a participatory project by Red Earth and Reigate Primary School, in association with Hands Up. The project, directed by Dorothy Heathcote was based on Mantle of the Expert, a drama-based holistic approach to the curriculum, invented by Heathcote and exported to classrooms around the world.

“The dramatic world created by Heathcote for the project was rich, complex, multi-themed and multi-layered. It fired the children’s imaginations and their ’need to know’.“

Wendy Rouse (from The Secret Language of Cranes, a description of the project)
